FZN Winter Sports Preview

Boys Basketball

Head Coach: Micheal Uffmann (1st year)

Team Strengths"Our team strength will be our athletic ability and our ability to make plays. We will at our best when we create turnovers and get scoring opportunities in transition. We have some guys that get to the rack well. We also have good depth so all 12 guys will be able to contribute throughout the season."

Top Returners: Marco Powells averaged 18 points per game last season and was the leading scorer . He has 793 career points. King Rue averaged 7 points per game last year for the Panthers. Ronald Cross, Cerry Watson, and Jay Bresnahan all have starting experience from last season.

Top Newcomers: Mujtaba Alkhaldi will have a big role for the Panthers as a sophomore. He has great touch and sees the floor well for a post player.

Season Expectations/Goals: "Our season expectations is to get better every day. We want to be playing our best basketball in March. We would also like to bring home some hardware in each of our three tournaments."

Girls Basketball

Head Coach: Jeremy Rapp (4th year)

Team Strengths: "Speed"

Top Returners: Dajah Robinson, Katie Grimes

Top Newcomers: Makayla Meiser

Season Expectations/Goals: "We are young and inexperienced. Our goal is to give our best effort night in and night out. We want to play fearless! Our motto is "Play Green". We do not back down from anyone, we keep playing our game."


Head Coach: Josh Cooper (3rd year)

Team Strengths: "We return 7 of our district starters from last year. The team worked hard in the off-season with wrestlers putting in time and work across a number of tournaments and camps, including a strong showing at the SIUE team wrestling camp"

Top Returners: Nate O'Neal is our lone state qualifier from 2017, but he is joined by Teddy Hickey, Jack Ederer, and Cameron Pickering who all qualified for state in 2016. Ederer also qualified in 2015. Hickey, Ederer, and Pickering, who wrestled in New York state last year, all had great seasons last year. Nathan Burns, Brendan Keeling, and Calvin Pieper also return as seniors who have wrestled the past 3 years and are expected to have good senior years. All will offer tons of leadership in the wrestling room. Those veterans wil be joined by Derick Buda-Smith and Logan Prinster who wrestled their way to winning seasons in the varsity line-up last year.

Top Newcomers: Other sophomores who saw varsity action last year include Brady O'Neal and Austin Mayton. Freshmen who will push for varsity spots include: Ayden Daniels, Devin Kulp, and Eddie Angleback.

Season Expectations/Goals: "The expectation for this year is to compete! We want to be a Class 4 program that belongs. Last year was a difficult transition as we were moved from Class 3 to Class 4. Last season served as a wake-up call, and we hope to respond. We want to compete in the very tough GAC conference. We are looking to be a winning program in duals, finish in the top 5 at the conference meet, and qualify more individuals to the state meet."

Girls Swimming

Head Coach: Jay Young (5th year)

Team Strengths: "Depth. Multiple very good options for specialty stokes. Solid dive team as well."

Top Returners: Michaela Russ, Cicely Berzack, Hannah Simonds, Jordan Brown, and Dani Smith

Top Newcomers: Avery Meade, Gwen Raziq

Seasons Expectations/Goals: "While there's a lot of improvements to be made throughout the season, we expect to battle for a conference championship this year. We have a number of individuals with their eyes on school record times. We hope to qualify multiple individuals to the state meet."
