The FZN football team continued their winning ways last Friday as the Panthers defeated rival Fort Zumwalt West 28 - 14. The game was played at Fort Zumwalt West. It was the 5th straight victory for the Panthers in the series that was revived in 2014. With the victory, the Panthers can once again lay claim to the unofficial title of "City Champs" in a game that featured the City of O'Fallon's two public high schools
The Panthers, following up on their effort against Francis Howell in the opener, used a balanced offensive attack throughout the contest. The Panther passing attack netted 216 yards while the Panthers rushed for 135 yards. Junior tailback Izaiah Hartrup stood out for the Panthers as Hartrup rushed for 84 yards on 8 carries and two touchdowns including a 42 yard run in the third quarter that put the Panthers ahead to stay. The versatile Cairo Payne scored the first touchdown of the night, hauling in a 47 yard pass from quarterback Joel Hilliard. Payne led all Panther receivers as he totaled 91 yards on 4 receptions. Hilliard finished the night 10/18 for 216 yards passing. He threw for one score against two interceptions. Fullback Jaylin Vaughn scored the other touchdown for the Panthers on a 15-yard scamper in the second quarter.
The Panther defense played exceptionally well all night as they contained the Jaguar offense for most of the evening. Max Martin (6 tackles/3 assists) and Jaylin Vaughn (5 tackles/3 assists) led the Panther defensive effort. Jarod Anderson and Shaun Hall both recorded sacks for the Panthers and Cairo Payne picked up a Jaguar fumble to aid the Panther defensive effort.
This week (9/7) the Panthers host long time area power Parkway Central. The Panthers and the Colts last met in the 2015 district semi-final game. From 2013 - 2015 the two teams played 4 games with each team winning 2 games each.
