Announcements and Important Events
The FZN boys tennis team recently completed the regular season portion of their season. The team defeated Troy (9 - 0) in their most recent contest to win their 9th match of the season. The team had won only 2 matches a season ago. The nine wins in 2018 matches the school record for wins last achieved in 1997. The 1997 team was coach by current FZN football coach Joe Bacon, who has also coached the school record holding team for wins in football. The Panthers overall record currently stands at 9 - 5. The Panthers still have the opportunity to set a new school mark with team district play slated to begin next week.
This year's squad is led by Head Coach - Kyle Brown, a long-time teacher and coach at FZN. Coach Brown returned to the tennis team last season after several years away from the sport. When asked what he attributed the team's success this season he responded, "We have a good deal of youthful enthusiasm (the Panthers will graduate only one varsity squad member in 2018) and a group of guys committed to getting better." Coach Brown also indicated that Panthers have had some success making headway with multi-sport athletes. Of the Panther's top ten players nine participate in at least one other sport in addition to tennis at FZN. Brown added, "This group of kids likes to compete, they like to be challenged." It can be noted that unlike many of the teams they have faced this year, the Panthers were not fortunate to have players with previous experience prior to high school. Making this year's accomplishments ever more impressive.
The varsity team consists of: (Singles) #1 - Dillion Tripamer, #2 - Eric Wang, #3 - Teddy Hickey, #4 - Owen Sears, #5 - Luke Herbst, #6 - Joel Hillard (Doubles) #1 (Tripamer/Wang), #2 (Hickey/Hillard), #3 (Sears/Herbst)
The Panthers placed 3 doubles team and one singles at the recent GAC North/Central tournament.
Teddy Hickey/Joel Hilliard 3rd - #2 Doubles
Luke Herbst/Owen Sears 2nd - #3 Doubles
Issac Fife/Mason Cochran 1st - #4 Doubles
Andrew Perez 2nd - #7 Singles
The Panthers will play again next Monday as they host Fort Zumwalt East in district play. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm. The winner of the North/East match will advance to face district #1 seed Fort Zumwalt South
